Simcoe is a county located in central Ontario, originally established as “Simcoe District” in 1843. The land area of the county is 1,868.95 square miles and it is located between Georgian Bay and Lake Simcoe. The elevated Niagara Escarpment runs through sections of the western part of the county. The county seat is Springwater Township, just outside of Barrie. The lake is bordered by Simcoe County, Durham Region, and York Region. The city of Barrie is located on Kempenfelt Bay, and Orillia is located at the entrance to Lake Couchiching. The watershed draining into the lake contains a population of roughly half a million people, including the northern portion of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
